In 1999 the Council approached fledgling company EIBS to provide a web content management system solution for their proposed new website. The resulting solution was Easysite. The following year Easysite V1 went live and the first Easysite website (www.leicester.gov.uk) launched. Over a decade later and the Leicester City Council / EIBS partnership is stronger than ever. Leicester have developed a comprehensive website providing a vast range of online services.

Leicester City Council have over 150 web authors who update and generate new content to the Council’s website, with a few relatively small teams responsible for maintaining, developing and managing the site as a whole. Easysite’s Digital Asset Manager, empowers these small teams to manage the site with minimum fuss. Web authors are based across the city and are typically “non-technical” staff. Easysite’s Asset Manager ensures that distance is no issue at all and that any assets that are uploaded for publishing (images/ PDF documents/ spread sheets etc.) are centrally stored and managed.

If you visit www.leicester.gov.uk, as well as how great the site looks, you’ll notice how extensive and easy to navigate around it is and how each area of the site has been tailored for its audiences’ needs. Leicester City Council have invested time in, not only making use of Easysite’s extensive built-in functionality and styling, but they’ve also realised how straightforward it is to develop and extend their Easysite powered website to incorporate multimedia elements, such as Flash and video, to create a more interactive online environment.

Easysite generates personalised content...

It’s not just web pages that Leicester customise, they’ve also discovered how compatible and customisable the range of Easysite modules can be.

Leicester have used the Buildportal module to create ‘My Leicester’. They’ve used their own design and incorporated widgets to access directories, such as lists of Leisure centres, local events and they’ve even linked the BBC weather gadget so residents can view their local forecast at a glance.

Even more impressively Leicester have created an interactive Flash based map of the county, with icons representing the locations of public parks. Each icon will take you through to a page detailing information about that specific park. “Park Navigator” is just one great example of Leicester’s creative thinking brought to life within Easysite’s Buildportal module.

Multiple websites from a single Easysite installation.

Leicester decided that some of their local government services deserved their own online space and as a result developed a number of microsites, all managed from their single central Easysite installation.

With Easysite microsites are easily rolled out without the need for extra versions of the software.
